What is this?
The first day of the course will expand on the "Know Before You Go" program. We'll use videos, demonstrations, and discussions to teach the Four Gets (get the gear, get the training, get the forecast, and get the picture). We'll discuss how weather, snowpack, terrain, and the human element impact the probability of an avalanche. We'll also talk about avalanche rescue gear, red flags, human factors, and rescue fundamentals.
The second day is in the field, and we'll dig snowpits, practice beacon/probe/shovel rescue, make snowpack observations, and look for red flags. You will need skis or snowshoes; appropriate clothing for a day in the snow; food; water; and a daypack to carry your gear in. On Saturday, we'll remind every one of the gear to bring on Sunday, and will provide directions to Sunday's meeting place.
If you have questions about the class, please send an email to
The course fee is not for the instruction, rather to cover costs to produce the course.
